As an immigrant, my mother strived to become a nurse. It was tough- she persevered to learn skills and subjects that weren't in her native language and struggled to fit in with her classmates. The cultural and social barriers made her journey to becoming a nurse difficult. Growing up, I remember my mother coming home from her night shifts at the hospital completely beat and tired, yet selflessly never complained as she took care of my sister and me. She always had time for us despite how tough the hospital life could be. My mother made the ultimate decision a few years later to leave bedside nursing when her mental health started to decline (and my sister and I grew and demanded higher attention). She struggled with this decision as she felt like she wasn't enough and that her hard work in school had been wasted. However, she didn't let it stop her. She remembered she loved nursing because of its versatility. She might not have enjoyed bedside nursing, but she enjoys communicating with those who reminded her of herself: immigrants who struggled to understand healthcare and needed guidance. She currently works in a non-profit organization for underserved Chinese immigrants with young children and provides workshops, lectures, and immunization check-ups which allows her to connect with a community that she was part of. Through this, she can make an impact as a nurse to help those who cannot speak English well and need directions. She reminds me that there is no correct language, position, or race to be a nurse, but rather the love and compassion we give to the people we serve. I'm honored to have a mother like her as a role model and remember her values in my own nursing journey.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Jessie Jellen has got to be the best nurse in the entire world. She has such a positive attitude and she is so nice to me. She is such a joy to be with. She is so sweet to her daughter Nikki Jellen SBUSON graduating class of 24’, president of Pre-Nursing Society. Every NICU baby would be blessed to have her as their nurse. Her IV skills are some of the best I have ever laid eyes upon. Her communication is super therapeutic and the babies love her so much. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there!!!! :D

One of the most significant female nursing figures in my life is a woman named Jessie Jellen. With her decades of experience as a NICU nurse, she embodies compassion, dedication, and resilience. Jessie’s unwavering commitment to caring for others has left an indelible mark on me as a future prospective nurse. She epitomizes the essence of nursing—providing comfort and healing for each and every one of her patients. Her tireless efforts in the field, coupled with her innate ability to connect with patients, inspire me daily. Through her example, I've learned not only the importance of nursing practice but also the profound impact of empathy and kindness in healthcare. Jessie’s legacy as a nurturing caregiver and as a mother to Nikki Jellen, also a phenomenal prospective nurse in her own right, continues to shape my aspirations and fuels my passion for nursing, reminding me of the profound difference one person can make in the lives of many.
